Ulysses Grant was born in Ohio in 1822. He attended West Point and served as a Lieutenant in the Mexican War but wrote, "A military life had no charms for me." Grant returned home, and as a farmer and businessman, was an utter failure. Later, he accepted a job as clerk in his father's store, and then, the Civil War began. Grant volunteered.
